I've got a hitter on my hands

Aidan's got a real problem with hitting his parents. Sometimes when he's wound up and excited, he does it and he'll get a swift and harsh no!, but we punish him when he's more in control of his sensibilities. When we say no it seems to fall on deaf ears, so last night I resorted to putting him in his room for a time out. Problem is that nowadays he doesn't mind being in his room and he'll find something to do during that minute or so of time out. I thought time outs weren't supposed to be enjoyable! He didn't like it last night though and I had to put him in there twice for hitting. I hope the connection is made soon because it makes me angry when he hits and I'm growing very tired of it.

Other thoughts - when we went to the thrift store yesterday I found some nice Cooking Light magazines 4/$1 to add to my recipe collection. I also picked up a Frugal Gourmet cookbook. I just wanted to browse through my magazines and read my new book and enjoy them, but the guilt I felt at not doing something PRODUCTIVE was very evident. If I'm not taking care of Aidan, cooking, cleaning, or substitute teaching, I'm studying the mortgage brokering industry, business marketing or working on Discovery Day. Yesterday I just wanted some time to read something for FUN. I do surf the internet for fun for a chunk of time every day, but not for all that long. My mind's on business 24/7 and that's another reason for not posting as often on my blog. I don't want to over do it and become burned out before I can even start!

I also did buy a new picture for Aidan's room. I'll take a photo of it and post it later today!

i thought the same thing about timeouts at first - that they weren't supposed to be enjoyable. i've since learned that the real purpose of them (or so i'm told) is just to stop the unwanted behaviour. so it's ok if they find something else to do that's fun during the minute or two of timeout. the point, as i've understood it, is that you stopped the behaviour.
good luck w/ the hitting. i really think it's a phase that all kids go through.
